Spirit of Life Ministries began as an Evangelistic Outreach Ministry in January, 1981 with Jerome Nelson, Sr. as the president. It evolved into an incorporated Church Assembly on November 4, 1990 with six (6) adults and eight (8) children. This group met on Sundays at a Holiday Inn near I-10 East and Mercury Road.
In July 1991, Spirit of Life Ministries moved to 911E Federal Road with 18 members. By the end of 1994, the church had grown to sixty-five (65) members and had outgrown its location.
In January, 1995, SLM began renting a building located at 13705 Corpus Christi. The building was approximately 5000 sq. ft, had a sanctuary that seated 150, 2 offices and 4 additional rooms. With the increase of worship space, the ministry was able to touch hundreds of lives over the next three (3) years.
By the end of 1997, SLM had grown to approximately 175 members. With the membership and visitors, chairs had to be put anywhere there was available space, such as the foyer, the prayer room adjacent to the pulpit, and in the hallway. In 1998, Pastor Nelson began a building fund in preparation for purchasing a church building.
In October of 1998, SLM purchased 1105 Flint St., and moved in with approximately 175 members. SLM had a 15 year mortgage on the building. After 3 years and 7 months, this mortgage was completely paid off.
As the church continues to minister and impact lives, it grows. Since 1990, under the leadership of Pastor Jerome Nelson, Sr., Spirit of Life has grown in a variety of ways. On May 9, 2007 Spirit of Life Ministries purchased the church facility located at 485 Maxey Road for $3,000,000.00. At the present time, SLM has over 450 members and is transforming lives through its vision to awaken Christians out of mediocrity to a whole hearted commitment to Jesus Christ through the preaching and teaching of the uncompromised Word of God.
